THE JANUARY 2009 MEETING OF THE CHICAGO ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

01/09/2009 - 7:00pm
01/09/2009 - 9:00pm

Friday Evening January 9th, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. at the Adler Planetarium

Everything You Know About The Sun But Were Too Embarrassed To Tell Anyone.

Joseph P. Mayer

The topics covered will include: "How does the Sun wobble in a multi-planet solar system?";  "Does the constantly changing center of gravity of the system affect the convection mode of the internal gaseous medium?";  "Does the well-known Zeeman Effect (broadening of spectral lines in the presence of a strong magnetic field) cause changes in solar flare emissions?".

Joe Mayer, observatory director of the CAS Becker Observatory, was expelled from the second grade in Catholic elementary school in a dispute with the nun over the validity of the dogma of "Transubstantiation."  He never returned to school, elementary or otherwise. (This short bio was provided by the speaker, however he seems to have omitted a few things. We’ll leave it up to him to set the record straight, if he so chooses.)

Please join us for what promises to be a very interesting presentation. Mr. Mayer’s talk will be at the Adler Planetarium on Friday, January 9th at 7 P.M. Enter at the south entrance.  There has been construction near the Adler Planetarium which has greatly restricted street parking. Park at the meters, if available, for 4 quarters (2 hours). Otherwise you must park in the lot. To enter the Museum Campus, you must exit Lake Shore Drive at 18th street and follow the winding road around Soldier Field to the Planetarium.

CTA ??  Red, Green and Orange Rapid Transit Trains cross Roosevelt Road (12th Street.)  Take the Roosevelt Road Bus to the planetarium.  From State Street in the Loop, take Bus # 146 directly to the planetarium

This is a presentation not to miss!!
